The Train to Busan fame filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho is making headlines for his latest Netflix psychological horror, Revelations. He has recently reflected on the making of the film and revealed how it changed his perspective.
The director revealed that he wanted to dig deeper into human vulnerabilities and that’s why he chose a smaller, more personal story.
In a recent interview with Variety, Yeon Sang-ho revealed, “With Revelations, I wanted to delve deeper into human nature and emotions. To really dive into human fragility, I needed an intimate storyline, not a grand-scaled one.”
The filmmaker added, “I am very much intrigued by the fragilities and vulnerabilities people harbour. I am a vulnerable human being myself, so I see those sides in me, in others and in society in general. That leads me to deeply ponder on how we can overcome those fragilities.”
Yeon Sang-ho revealed that he initially considered Revelations a distinctly local story, but after discussions with Alfonso Cuaron, he realized its themes had global resonance, capable of entertaining global audiences.
He also noted that he realized that issues relevant in Korea also resonated with a global audience. He noted that despite geographical differences, people shared common emotions.
Additionally, he mentioned that with Revelations being released simultaneously on Netflix worldwide, viewers globally could share their thoughts on the film in real time.
Netflix’s Revelations features an ensemble cast including, Ryu Jun-yeol as Pastor Sung Min-chan, Shin Hyun-been as Detective Lee Yeon-hui and Shin Min-jae as Kwon Yang-rae.
The latest South Korean mystery thriller follows a pastor driven to avenge a missing person and a detective investigating the case, who is haunted by eerie visions of her late sister.
