The highly anticipated Tamil action drama Thug Life is set to premiere in theatres on June 5, 2025. The film, which was directed by the renowned Mani Ratnam, features a strong ensemble that includes Ashok Selvan, Trisha Krishnan, Kamal Haasan, and Silambarasan TR in important roles.

Even though the movie is still a few weeks away from its theatrical debut, anticipation is already high for both its theatrical and eventual release on over-the-top (OTT) platforms.

Set against the gritty backdrop of a world governed by crime, violence, and shifting loyalties, Thug Life promises a dark, intense narrative. Kamal Haasan essays the role of Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker, a formidable and enigmatic figure who operates within the shadows of a powerful criminal empire. The film’s teaser offers a glimpse into this dangerous realm, with Kamal Haasan’s character introducing the term “yakuza,” suggesting a link between his persona and the global gangster milieu.

Thug Life will be available for streaming on Netflix after its theatrical run, much to the excitement of fans.

The makers officially confirmed the news through Netflix’s social media channels. A post on X (formerly Twitter) announced the update, stating, “The Vinveli Naayagan is back—and how?! Thug Life is coming to Netflix in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi after its theatrical release!"

This multilingual release ensures the film reaches a wide audience across India and beyond.

His striking appearance—dressed in an outfit reminiscent of martial arts legends—signals a fusion of international influences and sets the stage for adrenaline-fuelled action sequences. Themes of identity, betrayal, and survival appear central to the story, creating anticipation for a compelling cinematic journey.

Under Mani Ratnam’s direction, Thug Life assembles a formidable creative team. Cinematography is led by the seasoned Ravi K. Chandran, while Sreekar Prasad handles the editing. The film’s action scenes are in the capable hands of stunt choreographers Anbariv, promising thrilling combat sequences. Art direction is by Sharmishta Roy, and Kruti Mahesh Midya is behind the film’s choreography.

Adding to the grandeur is a musical score composed by the legendary A.R. Rahman, whose soundtracks often elevate Mani Ratnam’s stories to another level.
