Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan reunited on the silver screen with ace director Mani Ratnam after a gap of 38 years and fans were eagerly looking for the big release - Thug Life.

The movie hit theatres on June 5 and the advance bookings were much ahead of Akshay Kumar starrer Housefull 5 but despite that, it has failed to perform well at the box office.

Thug Life failed to pass the crucial Monday test and managed to collect Rs 40 crore in five days of its release.

According to the trade website Sacnilk, 'Thug Life' collected a mere Rs 3.25 crore on Day 5 as per the early estimates. In total the movie didn't even touch the Rs 50 crore mark and has only earned Rs 40.15 crore in 5 days.

Thug Life was in news for Kamal Haasan's remark he made during the film's audio launch in Chennai that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil.' It led to a furor, and the film was eventually banned in Karnataka. Kamal filed a case in the High Court to defend his movie, with a scheduled hearing for June 10.

Kamal Haasan had refused to apologize for his comments and said they had stemmed out of love for the Kannadigans.

During the promotions of the movie in Delhi, Moneycontrol met with the actor and director duo, who spoke about the decision to have an eight-week OTT window for Thug Life. Mani Ratnam told us that it was Kamal Haasan who had always advocated this in the past to safeguard theatrical releases due to the advent of OTT platforms.

Thug Life also has Trisha, Silambarasan, Abhirami, Sanya Malhotra, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Rohit Saraf and Vaiyapuri.
