The Conjuring: Last Rites is inching towards the end of its theatrical run in India, but not without losing steam. Starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, the latest Hollywood horror entry opened with record numbers but has struggled to maintain momentum thanks to lukewarm word-of-mouth.
After a strong first week of Rs 65.82 crore, the James Wan–backed film stumbled in its second weekend. It managed Rs 2 crore on Friday, Rs 3.50 crore on Saturday, and Rs 3 crore on Sunday, bringing the total just shy of Rs 75 crore at the Indian box office.
Second Monday Sees a Sharp Drop
On its second Monday, the Warner Bros release fell by nearly 50 percent compared to Friday, minting only Rs 1 crore. With this, the overall tally in India now stands at Rs 75.32 crore net.
Trade analysts say the film should eventually wrap up with collections around Rs 85 crore net in India. While that’s still a solid success for a horror film, industry insiders believe the numbers could have been far higher had audience reactions and critic reviews been stronger.
Competition Ahead With Jolly LLB 3
The real test is coming up this weekend. Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi’s Jolly LLB 3 is set to release, and insiders expect The Conjuring: Last Rites to lose a big chunk of its remaining shows. By all indications, Vera’s horror drama is on its way out of cinemas in the next week or two.
For Warner Bros, though, the Rs 85 crore mark in India remains a decent return, especially in a market where Hollywood horror usually tops out at much lower figures.
