Squid Game Season 2 creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explains Front Man's transformation into Player 001

The creator of Netflix's record-breaking series Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, recently shed light on the intriguing journey of Hwang In-ho, the Front Man, who entered the deadly games in disguise as Player 001 during Season 2. Hwang delved into the complexities of In-ho's character and his evolving dynamics with Seong Gi-hun (Player 456).

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang explained the reasoning behind making In-ho, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun, Player 001 in the Pentathlon round. He stated that Gi-hun, the protagonist played by Lee Jung-jae, is unaware of In-ho’s true identity, recognising him only by his voice. “We needed a new 001,” Hwang revealed. In-ho’s disguise allowed him to manipulate Gi-hun’s efforts subtly, appearing to help while working against him.

Hwang likened In-ho’s fall from humanity to the story of Darth Vader in Star Wars. “He experienced the cruelties of life and the rock bottom of humanity,” Hwang said, adding that this despair led In-ho to abandon his humanity and become a host of the games. This transformation mirrors Vader’s inability to achieve the ideals of a Jedi, driving his descent into darkness.

Despite their shared history of hardship, Hwang clarified that In-ho harbours hatred and a sense of superiority toward Gi-hun. In-ho views Gi-hun’s belief in humanity as naive and feels an inferiority complex when witnessing Gi-hun’s resilience. Hwang noted, “He harbours a strange sense of defeat when he sees Gi-hun.”

Hwang hinted that In-ho’s interactions with Gi-hun reveal glimpses of the humanity he has lost. Actor Lee Byung-hun, who portrays In-ho, interpreted his character as secretly admiring Gi-hun’s resolve. “He might even want Gi-hun to fight on,” Hwang shared.

Looking ahead, Hwang teased that the ultimate confrontation between In-ho and Gi-hun would center on their clashing ideologies. "He’s the one who wants to stop Gi-hun from stopping the games, and [in the end], it’ll be a final showdown between their beliefs and views of the world. That’s the story I wanted to penetrate all through the second season," he revealed, promising an emotionally charged conclusion to their story in Season 3.
