Renowned playback singer Sonu Nigam has stirred up controversy with his candid remarks about AR Rahman’s music for the 2008 Bollywood film Yuvvraaj.
Sonu Nigam didn't hesitate to express his views this time and labelled the album as “bekaar” (useless).
He further emphasized that he couldn't bring himself to lie and praise a song he genuinely didn’t like.
During an interview, Sonu Nigam was asked about his experience working with AR Rahman on Yuvvraaj. Sonu didn’t hesitate to share his honest opinion, specifically about the song Shano Shano from the film.
Speaking to O2 India, Nigam openly expressed his thoughts, saying,"That song is pretty average. It wasn’t such a good song. Let’s not talk about it. I won’t be able to lie. I won’t be able to praise a bad song."
He was then asked about the other two songs that he recorded for the same album and he said, "Voh bhool jaiye aap. Iske saare gaane bekaar the. [Just forget about it. All the songs were bad.]"
Yuvvraaj was a musical romantic family drama featuring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, and Zayed Khan.
The plot revolved around a fractured family of three brothers who compete to outsmart each other in order to inherit their father's fortune. The film explored themes of arrogance and overconfidence among the modern youth.
Released on November 21, 2008, the movie, however, failed to perform well at the box office.
Subhash Ghai, the director of Yuvvraaj, had previously shared with ANI that AR Rahman’s Oscar-winning track Jai Ho was initially created for his film, but he chose not to include it in the movie. “That Jai Ho song was made for Yuvvraaj. We recorded it but after recording, I felt that it won’t work for us in that situation. Rahman gave the song to that (Slumdog Millionaire) film. It is his composition."
AR Rahman went on to win two Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire at the 81st Academy Awards, taking home the awards for Best Original Song for Jai Ho and Best Original Score.
