Snoop Dogg has sparked debate after openly criticizing the increasing presence of LGBTQ+ representation in children’s movies. Speaking on the It’s Giving podcast, the rapper admitted he now feels “scared to go to the movies” with his grandson, citing an uncomfortable experience while watching Disney Pixar’s Lightyear (2022).

The rapper explained that he was caught off guard during the film when one of the characters, Alisha Hawthorne, was shown in a same-sex relationship with her wife, Kiko. In the movie, the couple are depicted getting married, sharing a kiss, and raising a child. While many praised the moment as a significant step for inclusivity in mainstream animation, Snoop described it as unsettling, especially because his young grandson questioned him about it mid-movie.

According to Snoop, his grandson asked, “Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!” The rapper confessed that he felt unprepared to answer such questions in that setting. “I didn’t come in for this. I just came to watch the goddamn movie,” he said, adding that the moment “messed him up” and left him confused.

Snoop’s frustration was not just with the storyline but with what he perceives as a broader trend. “What you see is what you see, and they’re putting it everywhere,” he said, suggesting that LGBTQ+ narratives are being inserted into children’s media too frequently. He voiced concern that children may not be ready to process such themes and that parents are being put in difficult positions to explain topics they might not feel equipped to address.

He further added, “These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.” For Snoop, the experience has made him wary of attending movies with young family members, fearing more unexpected situations.

The controversy highlights an ongoing cultural divide. For many advocates, the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters in films like Lightyear represents progress and normalization of diverse identities. But critics like Snoop argue it forces conversations about sexuality onto children before they are ready.
