After more than thirty years in Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan finally achieved a milestone many thought was long overdue—winning his very first National Film Award last month.
The superstar was honoured with the Best Actor award at the 71st National Film Awards for his gripping performance in Atlee’s Jawan.
There’s an interesting twist when it comes to the cash prize, though. Usually, the Best Actor winner receives Rs 2 lakh along with a medal and certificate.
But this year, Shah Rukh Khan is sharing the award with Vikrant Massey, who was recognised for his role in 12th Fail.
So, while both will get their own medals and certificates, the prize money will be split, meaning each will receive Rs 1 lakh. This is a standard practice at the National Film Awards when honours are shared.
Meanwhile, Rani Mukerji, who also won a National Award this year for her role in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, will receive the full Rs 2 lakh prize.
This award feels like a special moment in SRK’s career, which is already packed with accolades like the Padma Shri and prestigious international honours from France.
Despite his worldwide fame and massive fan following, this is the first time he’s taken home India’s top acting prize, making the achievement even more meaningful.
This year’s awards saw quite a few categories with joint winners, highlighting the richness of talent across Indian cinema. For example, Best Supporting Actor was shared by Vijayaraghavan (Pookkaalam) and M. S. Bhaskar (Parking), while Best Supporting Actress honours went to Janki Bodiwala (Vash) and Urvashi (Ullozhukku).
The Best Child Artist category also had multiple winners, recognising outstanding performances across films.
At the moment, Shah Rukh is shooting for Siddharth Anand’s next film King in Poland, but he’s expected to fly back soon to Delhi to receive the award from President Droupadi Murmu during the official ceremony.
Jawan was a standout not just for SRK’s intense double role as Azad, the vigilante jailer, and his father Vikram Rathore, but also for its strong social themes about corruption and injustice, wrapped in thrilling action sequences. Co-stars Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi added powerful performances, creating a film that balanced high-octane drama with heartfelt moments.
Shah Rukh Khan's incredible year, which saw Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki collectively earn over Rs 1,300 crore domestically and over Rs 2,500 crore worldwide. Shah Rukh Khan once again demonstred why he is still one of Bollywood's greatest icons.
