Sanya Malhotra is receiving praise for her powerful performance in MRS, a film that delves into the harsh realities of marriage and gender roles. Directed by Arati Kadav, the film has sparked important conversations about women’s struggles within domestic life — a message that even resonated deeply within Sanya's own family.
In an interview with Firstpost, Sanya revealed how MRS made her father reflect on his own role in the household. "My biggest takeaway is that I, too, am guilty of putting that pressure on my mother. My family saw it, and my father came back home and apologised to my mother. He said, ‘Oh my god, I can’t believe I do that too, and I’ve done this too.’ That was a huge realisation for us," she said.
Speaking to Indian Express, director Arati Kadav emphasised the need for ongoing conversations about gender roles. "Even though you hope people will watch the film and change, we are also realists. We know that mindset change doesn’t happen overnight. But all this adds to a collective conversation that can bring about that change. It’s like each drop is important to make an ocean," she said.
MRS premiered at the 2023 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. The film was also picked as the closing film at the 2024 New York Indian Film Festival, where the director Arati Kadav was nominated in the Best Director Category.
Looking ahead, Sanya has Dharma Productions' Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari in the pipeline. Her upcoming collaboration with Anurag Kashyap and Bobby Deol is also highly anticipated.
