Sanya Malhotra is riding high on the success of Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery, as the satirical Netflix feature was recently honoured with the National Film Award for Best Hindi Film.
Overjoyed with the recognition, Sanya reflected on what the project meant to her, expressing deep appreciation for the opportunity to headline such an unconventional and impactful story.
Taking to her Instagram, Sanya shared, "During the prep for Kathal I remember Yasho and I driving to Ghatigaon meeting the people who inspired him to write this story changed something in me. I still remember sitting in that car holding onto the weight of what it meant to play Mahima. I was overwhelmed, humbled and so deeply grateful."
Directed by Yashowardhan Mishra, Kathal uses satire to peel back layers of social commentary beneath the surface of a light-hearted mystery. Set in a small town, the narrative follows a young police officer, played by Sanya, as she investigates the comical disappearance of two jackfruits—an absurd case that becomes a window into deeper societal issues including bureaucracy, patriarchy, and media sensationalism.
Sanya’s portrayal of the earnest and sharp-witted cop earned widespread praise for its depth and relatability.
"Today, Kathal has won a National Award. I used to believe that with every film, my job was simple keep my head down, serve the story, serve the audience and give my heart to the work. I still believe that. But today, I’m allowing myself a pause. A moment to feel joy, pride and gratitude for this film for this team and for the stories that move us all." She continued in her post.

Actor Anantvijay Joshi, who starred alongside Sanya, also spoke of the film’s unexpected recognition. “I just received a call from somebody to congratulate me and that is how I got to know... It is a great satire. I think it feels very, very gratifying," he told News18 Showsha. He added that the team had never discussed awards during filming, choosing instead to focus on the film’s message and execution.
Kathal joins a growing list of acclaimed projects for Sanya, who also featured in Jawan and Sam Bahadur in 2023—both of which also received National Awards.
