Tennis legend Sania Mirza has always shown a brave face in public even when she was going through the biggest crisis in her life. That was the time when her marriage with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik had ended.

During a conversation on her podcast, Serving It Up With Sania Mirza, the former World No. 1, spoke about the challenges she has faced as a single mother.

Joining her was her close friend and director Farah Khan, who offered a rare insight into Sania’s most vulnerable moments.

Farah, who has known Sania for many years and is very close to her, praised Sania for balancing professional commitments with raising her son, Izhaan.

“You are now a single mother. Nothing is more difficult than being a single mother. It is very, very hard. We all have our journeys, and we have to choose what is best,” she said.

Responding with honesty, Sania admitted that the transition has been overwhelming at times.

“I don't want to mention it on camera, but there was a moment that was one of the lowest moments when you (Farah Khan) showed up on my set and I had to go on a live show after that. If you had not come there… I was shivering. And if you would not have come there I wouldn't have done that show. You told me, ‘No matter what, you are doing this show," Sania spoke about that one particular difficult day.

Farah then revealed what she had seen and said she 'got so scared.' "I never have seen you get a panic attack. I had to shoot that day, but I just left it and came there in my pyjamas and chappal," said Farah.

Sania Mirza’s personal life has always been under media scrutiny, starting with her high-profile wedding to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik in April 2010 in Hyderabad.

The wedding was one of the most talked-about cross-border weddings of its time and it dominated headlines across India and Pakistan.

It was eight years later that the couple welcomed their son, Izhaan and the couple had built a life in Dubai far away from media spotlight.

However, speculations about their relationship grew over the years, ultimately ending in January 2024 when Sania’s family confirmed her divorce through an official statement.

The news once again made headlines, especially after Shoaib Malik’s sudden announcement of his third marriage to Pakistani actress Sana Javed.

These developments have always placed Sania at the centre of national media attention.
