Ranabaali, a tragic yet epic story set during the 19th century British colonial rule of India, starring actors Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna is set to hit cinemas on 11th September.

The film has already created significant buzz for both, the power of its two leading stars as well as the project’s compelling vision to uncover a dark chapter from India’s shared history with Great Britain.

Story behind Ranabaali:

The heart and soul of this epic film is based on the period of India’s history known as the "Great Indian Famine," which occurred from 1876 to 1878, when over 10 million people died from hunger.

This tragedy was caused by the extreme drought that farmers in Rayalaseema (present-day Andhra Pradesh) had suffered prior to the onset of droughts, compounded by the British Raj’s excessive financial policies that continued to allow the exportation of grain out of India.

As Indian citizens died at alarming rates from starvation, the British Raj treated this crisis with restrictive policies, such as instituting strict fiscal measures and establishing "famine camps" where malnourished and starved Indians received food rations far below the recommended daily allowance (RDA) and were left to die.

More than 7 lakh people died from starvation in the Rayalaseema region of India alone during their battle against famine.

In addition to focusing on the tragedy caused by the indigenous/racial conflict in the region of India known as South Asia, the film Ranabali additionally highlights the stories of courageous individuals who fought against the oppressive forces of the British Empire.

The main character, played by Vijay Deverakonda, is modeled after a real historical figure, who showed tremendous bravery in defying British colonial rule.

Though these rebellions were labelled as criminal by British authorities, they are remembered in the region’s folklore as symbols of resistance and courage.

Fans have loved their on-screen chemistry in past projects and are very excited for this one as it will be their first collaboration after their wedding.

Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, Ranabaali consists of both fascinating historical events and emotional accounts of people fighting for their lives and freedom.

Ranabaali will try to build a strong connection with viewers across multiple genres and show how some struggles throughout our history have gone largely unnoticed.
