Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan condole loss of lives at Vijay’s Karur rally stampede

A wave of sorrow has swept across Tamil Nadu after the tragic Karur stampede claimed 29 lives, prompting an outpouring of condolences. Rajinikanth expressed deep grief, calling the loss of innocent lives “heart-shaking” and offering comfort to the injured.

The air at Karur on Saturday was filled with excitement and anticipation, as thousands gathered to see Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay in action. But what was meant to be a hopeful political moment turned into an unimaginable tragedy.

As per PTI, at least 29 lives were lost—many of them women and children—after a stampede broke out during the rally. Dozens more remain hospitalised.

The tragedy has deeply shaken Tamil Nadu. Celebrities, leaders, andcitizens alike have taken to social media to share their grief.

Rajinikanth wrote, “The news of the loss of innocent lives in the incident that occurred in Karur shakes the heart and causes immense grief. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. Comfort to those who were injured.”


Kamal Haasan shared his pain, saying, “My heart trembles. The news coming from Karur brings shock and sorrow… I urge the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that those rescued from the congestion receive proper treatment and that those affected receive appropriate relief.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also offered condolences: “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones.”

According to PTI, the overcrowded venue saw people fainting as the heat and congestion took a toll. Vijay, who was delivering his speech from atop his campaign vehicle, noticed the chaos unfolding below and paused mid-way.

Without hesitation, he called out for ambulances, tossed water bottles into the crowd, and pleaded for help from the police. He also alerted the public to a missing child in the crowd. Despite trying to regain control, the situation worsened, and he had to cut his speech short.

Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that 29 people had died and over 45 were under medical care. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin responded swiftly, calling a meeting of senior officials and dispatching ministers to the ground. He directed them to ensure that every affected individual receives immediate help.
