The Hyderabad Cybercrime police have registered a case against several X (formerly Twitter) handles for allegedly hurling online abuse and threats at playback singer and voice artist Chinmayi Sripada and her family.
The move comes after the singer publicly appealed to the authorities to take action against a series of targeted and derogatory posts directed at her.
According to The New Indian Express, a senior official from the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate confirmed that multiple X handles have been identified and named in the complaint. “The investigation is underway, and appropriate action will be taken as per the law,” the officer said.
The harassment reportedly began after Chinmayi reacted to a podcast in which participants allegedly made derogatory remarks about her. Following the incident, the abuse intensified online. Chinmayi and her husband, actor and filmmaker Rahul Ravindran then decided to call out the toxic behaviour they were being subjected to.
Expressing her frustration and exhaustion over the relentless online vitriol, Chinmayi wrote on X, “I don’t know how this behaviour and abuse are acceptable here, but please take action,” tagging the Telangana Police. She later escalated her appeal directly to Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, adding, “I am sick and tired of this everyday abuse. Women deserve better in Telangana. I’m happy to file a complaint — even if this case takes 15 years, let the law take its course. These men are saying my kids should die. Please help.”
Chinmayi, known for her work in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema, has long been an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and was among the most vocal voices during India’s #MeToo movement in the entertainment industry.

Recently she lauded actress Gouri Kishan for shutting down a sexist question at a media event. She wrote, “Gowri did an amazing job. The moment you call out a disrespectful and unnecessary question, a whole lot of shouting down happens. So proud that someone so young stood her ground and pushed back. No male actor gets asked what his weight is. No idea why they asked a female actor.”
