Kantara: Chapter 1 continues to dominate the box office. In its fifth weekend at the Indian box office, the film has collected around Rs. 9.25 crore. After its digital release, the movie kind of crashed in South India, dropping about 70% from the previous weekend.
The decline would have been closer to 75% in the absence of this holiday. Even though the hold in Hindi was slightly higher than usual, it was still better at about 60%.
In India, the total revenue has surpassed Rs. 689 crore. The movie is currently just Rs. 6 crore away from overtaking Chhaava as the year's highest grosser. The digital release seems to have slowed down the momentum of the film. Kantara sequel would have had momentum in the fourth week and would have closed at Rs. 720 crore.
With Rs. 799 crore after the fifth weekend, Kantara has already surpassed Chhaava's Rs. 786 crore to become the highest-grossing Indian film of the year globally. The film is expected to surpass the Rs 800 crore mark globally.
The film, which was released on October 2 in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali, and English, is retaining its strong cultural roots while appealing to viewers from a wide range of linguistic and geographic backgrounds.
