Despite having back-to-back hits in 2025, Rashmika Mandanna's fans were disappointed to hear that her much anticipated movie The Girlfriend had been postponed.

The buzz surrounding the movie reignited on social media, with fans flooding X (formerly Twitter) using the hashtag #ReleaseTheGirlfriend. Since the teaser premiered in December 2024, the film has remained a hot topic among Rashmika’s followers, who have been anxiously waiting for further announcements.

Not one to disappoint her admirers, Rashmika Mandanna also chimed in, offering heartfelt words that further heightened the buzz around the film. She wrote, “Hi my lovelies. I know we’ve been making you wait and your trend really is something else.. but trust me @23_rahulr is really working on it to give you the best output and it’s one of the most special kind of films.. its a film where we speak about things we generally don’t talk much about.. it’s a pure characters driven film and that’s the beauty of it.. we promise you we want to give you the best and it’ll be worth you while. But because of today.. for all the love you’ve shown us, we’ll just speed up the process and deliver it to you soonest!”

In response to the growing anticipation, the film’s director, Rahul Ravindran, addressed fans directly through his X handle. “Guys… there will be updates soon. Praamise. Please be a little patient," he wrote, reassuring netizens that developments are on the horizon.

This isn’t the first time Rashmika has acknowledged the anticipation surrounding the project. During an earlier Ask Me Anything (AMA) session with fans, one user enquired about updates on The Girlfriend. The actress replied, “@rahul_23 is planning only the best for you..even I am waiting for updates..when I have them I will share for sure."

Directed by Rahul Ravindran and produced by GA2 Pictures, Mass Movie Makers, and Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainment, The Girlfriend is hailed as a gripping romantic drama.

Dheekshith Shetty plays Rashmika's on-screen romantic interest, while she plays the lead role. Vijay Deverakonda provides the voiceover for the teaser, which provides an insight into the character's nuanced emotional development throughout her time in college.

Rashmika will also feature in Kuberaa, which is scheduled for a worldwide release on June 20, 2025, in addition to this project.
