Actor Rajkummar Rao is reportedly in talks to step into the lead role in the much-anticipated biopic on Ujjwal Nikam, one of India’s most respected and high-profile public prosecutors. The film, which was initially set to star Aamir Khan, will now have Aamir co-producing the project alongside Dinesh Vijan, the producer known for hits like Stree and Munjya.
According to a report by Mid-Day, a source close to the development revealed, “Dinesh is keen on having Rajkummar play Nikam. He brings the right intensity and range to the role. Preliminary talks have been positive.” The decision to cast Rajkummar comes as the makers aim to give the film a more grounded, realistic tone with a strong focus on courtroom drama and political themes.
The film’s script is currently being reworked to better align with Rajkummar’s acting sensibilities. While an official shooting schedule has not been disclosed, production is expected to begin soon.
Rajkummar is currently busy preparing for Vikramaditya Motwane’s upcoming project, in which he plays a physically demanding role as a sportsperson. The source added, “Raj is immersed in prep for Vikramaditya Motwane’s next, which is a physically and emotionally demanding script. The dates will need to be worked out accordingly.”
The biopic will trace the life and career of Ujjwal Nikam, highlighting his role in some of India’s most significant legal cases, including the 1993 Bombay Blasts, the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, the Gulshan Kumar murder case, and various high-profile rape and murder trials. Known for his eloquence, courtroom brilliance, and deep knowledge of the law, Nikam was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2016 for his exceptional service to the judiciary.
If finalized, this role could mark another powerful performance in Rajkummar Rao’s diverse filmography, as he steps into the shoes of a man whose legal career shaped key chapters of India’s criminal justice history.
