No one would have predicted that a humble rom-com made on a budget of Rs 3 crore featuring young actors would turn out to be the surprise winner at the box office. Premalu, directed by Girish AD, featuring Naslen, Mamita Baiju, and Shyam Kumar has already completed 26 days in theatres, collecting Rs 90 crore worldwide. From India alone, the film has garnered Rs 49.5 crore. Produced by Fahadh Faasil and Dileesh Pothan under the banner of Bhavana Studios, the film is predicted to hit a ton by the time it completes its theatre run. On the opening day, it collected Rs 9 lakh. As per Sacnilk's report, the film collected Rs 12.6 crore after the first week. Thanks to overwhelming word-of-mouth publicity, the theatres witnessed considerable footfalls, and the second week collected Rs 14.85 crore. Meanwhile, the Telugu distribution rights of Premalu have been bagged by SS Rajamouli’s son SS Karthikeya for an astronomical sum and will be released this week.
Premalu is almost entirely set in Hyderabad and revolves around an unemployed young lad who falls in love with an IT professional. He alters his plans to stay in the city and connects with her. It’s a fun, irreverent watch and the humour is on point.
This is Girish AD’s third film after the success of Thanneer Mathan Dinangal (2019) and Super Sharanya (2022). If the former was a teenage love story, the latter was placed on a college campus.
Meanwhile, Malayalam cinema is going through a terrific run at the box office. Three of its recent releases, Premalu, Bramayugam, and Manjummel Boys, all diametrically different genres have already touched the Rs 50-crore mark at the box office. Manjummel Boys has already entered the Rs 100 crore mark and is only the fourth Malayalam film to achieve that feat.
