Mumbai Police has summoned podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, to appear for questioning on Saturday as part of an investigation into his controversial comments made by him which eventually went viral. Allahbadia had missed a previous summons on Friday, prompting authorities to take further action.
As per a report from Pinkvilla, On February 14, the police from both Mumbai and Guwahati went in search of Allahbadia, visiting his Mumbai residence in the Versova area. However, they found his flat locked and were unable to reach him. According to a police officer, the Mumbai Police had initiated an inquiry and arrived at his home to question him regarding the case.
Allahbadia had previously been asked to attend a court hearing at the Khar police station in Mumbai on Thursday, February 13, to provide his statement. However, he requested that the procedure be conducted at his home, which was not granted.
His failure to appear led to the authorities intensifying their efforts, ultimately visiting his residence. With the flat locked and no way to contact him, both Mumbai and Guwahati police teams returned to the Khar station.
The controversy surrounding Allahbadia stemmed from a complaint filed on February 10, after his inappropriate remark on the comedy show India’s Got Latent. In the now-deleted episode, Allahbadia posed a highly controversial question to one of the contestants, asking, “Will you watch your parents have sex?” This statement triggered a massive public outcry and legal scrutiny.
In response to the mounting backlash, Allahbadia faced both legal and public fallout. The controversy escalated after the Mumbai Police visited his home, and the YouTuber’s show was taken down by comedian Samay Raina.
Raina deleted all episodes of India’s Got Latent from his YouTube channel on February 13, following the incident.
In a further development, Ranveer Allahbadia approached the Supreme Court on Friday to request the consolidation of multiple FIRs lodged against him across India over his comments. The YouTuber’s legal team, led by Abhinav Chandrachud, son of former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, is representing him in the case.
In light of the controversy, a parliamentary panel is considering summoning Allahbadia to address the issue.
Additionally, a committee led by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has asked the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to respond by February 17, suggesting necessary amendments to laws to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident has not only sparked debates about the limits of free speech in entertainment but has also brought attention to the accountability of digital creators and the responsibility they hold in ensuring that their content does not promote offensive or inappropriate behavior. The case continues to unfold as Allahbadia faces legal challenges in the wake of his comments.
