Eiichiro Oda, the brilliant mind behind One Piece, has once again stepped back from the manga, this time due to ongoing health concerns.

The news triggered a wave of concern and emotional messages on the internet among fans who have followed the epic saga for decades. In addition to expressing how much the story means to them, many urged Oda to put himself before deadlines.

“He should continue the manga only when he is fully well,” became a recurring sentiment, reflecting genuine care for the creator behind the world they love.

Oda has taken several pauses in recent months, all due to health concerns, underscoring the tremendous pressure he faces to produce such a cherished, long-running series.

However, Oda's difficulties extend beyond a single manga. They have sparked a broader discussion about the rigorous work culture in Japan, particularly for creative professionals. Even the most gifted artists have little time for relaxation due to long hours, strict deadlines, and extremely high expectations.

Many are concerned that this unrelenting pace is harming creativity as well as health. Without significant reforms, critics contend, Japan runs the risk of driving its most talented artists to the edge.

Though it comes at a high price, Japan's work culture is frequently praised for its dedication and discipline. The severe effects of excessive stress and long hours are demonstrated by the phenomenon of karoshi, or death from overwork. Workers usually deal with demanding schedules, pressure from superiors, and situations where pawa-hara, or power harassment, is common.

Cultural norms complicate fatigue and negatively affect general well-being by making it difficult to take even the leave to which you are entitled. Gender inequality is another issue, with women still underrepresented in leadership and facing barriers to career growth.

Those who may not know, Eiichiro Oda is the author and illustrator of the Japanese manga series One Piece, which is all caps. In order to become the next King of the Pirates, Monkey D. Luffy and his band, the Straw Hat Pirates, must traverse the Grand Line in pursuit of the fabled "One Piece" treasure.
