People are going back to old movies and TV shows from the 1990s and 2000s a lot, which could mean the end of the heyday of weekly feel-good romantic comedies. Oho Enthan Baby, a colorful love drama that promised to portray the ups and downs of modern relationships, arrives in this place. But does it work?
The story is about Ashwin (Rudra), a lowly assistant director, who gets to share his thoughts with actor Vishnu Vishal, who plays himself. Ashwin's boss, King (Redin Kingsley), communicates to him directly, and Ashwin keeps getting turned down until Vishnu tells him to write a love story, which he has never done before.
Ashwin is hesitant at first, but he begins to narrate a very personal story that is comparable to his own relationship with doctor Meera (Mithila Palkar). The story ends suddenly with their split. Vishnu advises him to go back to Meera to finish the story. This forces Ashwin to choose between his pride and his passion to make movies.
Krishnakumar Ramkumar, who is known for his commercials, presents the story of Oho Enthan Baby in a story-within-a-story style. The first half is full of hilarious portions, inside jokes about the business, and mentions of social media. For instance, there are mentions of Ajith Kumar's racing career and Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan. Before the story turns into a relationship, these periods make everything feel new. Vishnu says Ashwin is "toxic," while King says Ashwin and Meera's relationship is "toxic." This is an uncommon case of self-awareness in this type of writing.
The movie is amusing and deals with trauma in a kind way, which is why people like it so much. Mysskin, who portrays himself, gives the part a weird intensity. Cinematographer Harish Kannan's vivid graphics and Jen Martin's catchy soundtrack make the movie lively and enjoyable. Mithila Palkar is a terrific Meera; she makes the part feel authentic and warm. In strong scenes, Rudra is more convincing than in romantic ones that are less intense.
The movie, on the other hand, has some flaws in the last act. There are some cliches, including Ashwin's sorrowful parents and the old-fashioned attitude that the woman should apologize even when she is right. Some of the supporting characters, including Meera's mother, don't appear fully developed. The ending isn't as strong as it could have been since the emotional payoff isn't as strong as the excitement of the first half.
Oho Enthan Baby is a sincere attempt to improve how current Tamil love stories are written, even though it has several faults. Even if it's only half-baked by the end, it makes you laugh, contains problems you can relate to, and is culturally relevant. If you like Tamil movies, you'll enjoy this one, but it's not the timeless love story it aspires to be.
