Prem Kumar talks about his filmmaking

Filmmaker Prem Kumar—best known for his work in 96—has a unique style for crafting potent performances on screen and is renowned for his nuanced storytelling and engrossing images. His techniques go beyond the script; he mainly uses authenticity, silence, and set discipline to elicit sincere feelings from his actors.

During a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter, which was also a round table conference with many other happening directors, Prem Kumar spoke of his way of filmmaking in both 96 and Meiyizhagan.

Silence is crucial, according to Prem Kumar, particularly during crucial scenes like lighting setups, live song recordings, or emotionally charged scenes. During these times, only the most important crew members are permitted on set, such as the camera crew. This guarantees that actors can stay emotionally present and focused without needless distractions.

Prem insists on creating sets that feel authentic in every way, including the materials used, in order to increase the realism of his scenes. Instead of using a staged backdrop, the intention is to give actors the impression that they are in a real place. He thinks that more grounded and engaging performances result from this realism.

Prem also places a high value on upholding a respectful environment. He forbids yelling on the set and refrains from packing the actors' scenes with extra crew. This allows actors to be free from distractions and pressure to stay in character and give their best performance.

Actors have a brief opportunity to practice in the room prior to filming. This enables them to adapt to their roles and take in their surroundings.

These brief but effective rehearsals allow actors to fully immerse themselves in the scene prior to the cameras rolling, helping to reinforce the realism Prem is aiming for.

When actors are fully engaged in their performance, Prem frequently removes the light men and other unnecessary crew members from the set to enhance actor immersion. This unbroken setting guarantees that the scene's mood is maintained throughout the shoot and enables actors to maintain an emotional bond with their characters.

Prem Kumar keeps establishing himself as a filmmaker who values artistic integrity, emotional truth, and a profoundly respectful approach to performance with this concentrated and engrossing style.
