Nicholas Brendon, best known to millions as Xander Harris from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54.
His family confirmed the news, sharing that he passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes, and described his loss as both heartbreaking and deeply personal.
In a moving statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, the family remembered him not just as a well-known actor, but as a son and brother first. “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was. While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”
Born in Los Angeles in 1971 as Nicholas Brendon Schultz, he originally dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player. Acting came later, partly as a way to cope with a stutter he had struggled with since childhood.
Over time, he not only found confidence in performance but also used his visibility to support awareness around speech disorders, including his work with the Stuttering Foundation of America.
His role as Xander Harris became one of the most memorable parts of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, running through all seven seasons. Xander wasn’t a superhero or vampire slayer—he was ordinary, relatable, and often awkward—and that is exactly what made him so beloved.
For many fans, Nicholas Brendon helped redefine what a “normal” hero could look like on television.
Outside Buffy, he appeared in projects such as Psycho Beach Party, Kitchen Confidential alongside Bradley Cooper, and guest roles in series like Criminal Minds.
He continued acting into the 2020s, often in smaller or independent productions.
His later life was marked by public struggles with mental health and addiction, which he spoke about openly in interviews. Despite difficult periods, people close to him had recently expressed hope that he was finding stability again.
He is survived by his twin brother, Kelly Donovan, with whom he shared a close bond and even appeared on screen in Buffy.
