Update on Nayanthara and Dhanush case

Tamil actress Nayanthara has landed in fresh trouble over the use of another clip in her Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale, which was released in November 2024.

The Madras High Court has directed the makers of Nayanthara's documentary, Tarc Studios, to file a response regarding the alleged unauthorised use of clips from the hit Tamil movie Chandramukhi.

Earlier, soon after the documentary's release, Tamil superstar Dhanush had sued the actress for using a few scenes from his film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan without his consent.

Dhanush's Wunderbar Films had filed a case against the makers Tarc Studios and also sought damages of Rs 1 crore. The case is still in court.

Now in this fresh case, AB International, which is the copyright holder of Chandramukhi, has accused the Nayanthara documentary makers of using some portions from their hit without seeking prior permission. The 2005 film had Rajinikanth, Jyotika and Nayanthara in the lead.

The petitioner, AB International, has argued that despite serving a legal notice seeking the removal of alleged clips and claiming Rs 5 crore in damages, the documentary continues to stream using their unauthorized clips.

The petition also requested the honorable court release an order restraining Tarc Studios from using Chandramukhi footage and removing the clips from the documentary. It should also direct the makers to submit accounts of profits earned through the film's streaming.

Justice Senthilkumar, counsel for Tarc Studios, has said that negotiations were underway to resolve the dispute.

The court has allowed Tarc Studios time until October 6 to file a reply.

In November 2024, Nayanthara publicly called out Dhanush and wrote an open letter on her Instagram where she slammed the actor for his action.

"What's even more shocking is your legal notice after the release of the trailer of the Netflix documentary... This is an all-time low from you and speaks so much about your character. I wish you were half the person you portray to be on stage in audio launches in front of your innocent fans but clearly you do not practice what you preach, at least not for me and my partner," she then wrote.

Naanum Rowdy Dhaan had Dhanush and Nayanthara in the lead roles. The 2015 Tamil film was actually directed by her now husband Vignesh Sivan and produced by Dhanush.
