The investigation into music icon Zubeen Garg’s mysterious death in Singapore has deepened. Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the high-profile case, has now uncovered multiple bank accounts linked to arrested festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta.

According to sources, the accounts—seven in total—were officially frozen after Shyamkanu Mahanta’s detailed questioning by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday and Wednesday. Earlier, the SIT had seized several documents from his Guwahati residence pointing to what investigators describe as “huge financial irregularities.”

An official from a private bank, who appeared before the SIT to hand over details, confirmed, “He had seven accounts. These have been frozen.”

Suspended Security Officers Under the Scanner

In a related turn, Zubeen Garg’s two personal security officers (PSOs)—who were recently suspended—appeared before the SIT on Thursday. Investigators reportedly found over ₹1 crore in total deposited in their accounts, raising eyebrows.

The SIT discovered Rs 70 lakh in one account and Rs 45 lakh in another, amounts significantly exceeding their known income sources.

Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Garg, addressed the matter, explaining that the late singer was known for his generosity. “The PSOs have all bank statements. They kept a diary of various transactions,” she said, suggesting that some of the money might have been related to the singer’s social welfare efforts.

“They Haven’t Been Truthful Yet,” Says Garima Garg

Clearly distressed by the ongoing revelations, Garima Garg expressed her doubts about the honesty of the accused. “Five people have been arrested but they haven’t spoken the truth yet. Those who were eyewitnesses should come out. Things should not be politicised,” she said.

Before his untimely death, which shocked fans nationwide, Zubeen Garg was scheduled to perform on September 20 at the Northeast India Festival in Singapore.

Zubeen Garg's longtime collaborator Diganta Sarma, a sound engineer, recorded his statement with the SIT in the meantime. In an effort to clarify any unresolved issues in the case, he also urged authorities to make the full video footage of the singer's last moments public.

As Assam awaits resolution in one of its most emotional and well-publicized investigations in recent history, the SIT keeps piecing together witness statements and financial trails.
