Zubeen Garg death probe: SIT arrests two personal security officers over suspicious Rs 1 crore transaction

In a major development in the ongoing investigation into the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) has arrested two of his long-time Personal Security Officers (PSOs). The arrests come after financial irregularities worth over Rs 1 crore were traced to their bank accounts.

According to officials, the two PSOs, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya — were taken into custody on Thursday. “Yes, both have been arrested by the SIT/CID today. The team has brought the arrested persons to the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court for production,” confirmed SIT Chief and Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta.

Zubeen Garg, one of the most celebrated voices from Assam, died on September 19 in Singapore, just a day before he was scheduled to perform at the Northeast India Festival. His sudden death sent shockwaves across the music fraternity and his massive fan base in the Northeast.

The SIT has already made several arrests in the case, including that of event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, co-singer Amritprava Mahanta, the singer’s cousin, and suspended APS officer Sandipan Garg. With the latest arrests, investigators believe they are closer to understanding the financial and personal network around the singer in his final days.

Earlier, reports had suggested that Zubeen’s death occurred during a scuba diving session in Singapore. However, new claims by his bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami allege that the singer may have been poisoned, adding a darker twist to the case.

Meanwhile, Zubeen’s widow, Garima Saikia, has urged the public not to politicise his death. Speaking to the media, she said, “I am still keeping the faith. Five to six people have been arrested, but they haven’t spoken the truth yet. I hope the truth comes out soon.” She added, “It’s been 21 days since Zubeen’s death. Those who were eyewitnesses should come forward. We’ve lost our icon, our heartbeat. This should not be politicised.”

With each arrest, the case continues to uncover layers of financial and interpersonal complexities surrounding Zubeen Garg’s final days, keeping fans and the music community anxiously awaiting answers.
