Ziddi Girls faces legal trouble

Following the release of the controversial trailer for the web series Ziddi Girls, which depicted DU's Miranda House in an objectionable manner, the college authorities have taken legal action.

The trailer, which featured a voice-over stating, "Aaj MH mein padhai nahi, porn chalta hai," prompted an outcry from the college administration, students, and alumni, who condemned it as a “defamatory and inaccurate representation” of the institution.

As per a report from Times of India, the authorities filed a police complaint and sent a legal notice to the makers of the web series.

The Prime Video fictional series is set in a Delhi college, Matilda House, and is referred to as MH, the very acronym often used for Miranda House, a premier institution for women students. The show revolves around the lives of five students in search of their identity.

The initial trailer's portrayal of the college sparked outrage, leading the makers to release a second trailer with a disclaimer stating, “This series is a work of fiction. It’s based on a fictional institution and characters. It’s not intended to defame any person, organisation or educational institution. Viewer’s discretion is advised.”

Despite the new disclaimer, the college authorities remain dissatisfied. They have demanded that the first trailer be taken down and requested an urgent preview of the series before its release.

As per a report from Times of India, the college expressed in a statement, "Miranda House as an institution and its extended alumni have been shocked and outraged by the misrepresentation of the institution in the series Ziddi Girls. It is far more anguishing since the series is directed by celebrated alumna Shonali Bose and parts of it were shot in the college building."

The authorities also voiced concerns about the use of the acronym MH for the fictional institution and the continued circulation of the objectionable trailer.

"The producers have released a new trailer which seems to be balanced. However, the earlier objectionable trailer continues to circulate," they stated. In light of the situation, the college had no choice but to take legal action, including filing the police complaint and sending the legal notice.
