The popular thrash metal band Megadeth has officially announced their retirement after over four decades of its successful run. The band has recently announced that they will retire after their forthcoming album and tour in 2026.
The co-founder and frontman of the band, Megadeth, Dave Mustaine, announced the news on their YouTube channel. The band confirmed the “end of their career” after over four decades in the business. However, they have yet to announce their upcoming studio album.
In the YouTube video titled The End is Near, Vic Rattlehead, the mascot of the band, said, “It is confirmed that the next Megadeth studio album will be the last. 40 years of metal forged in steel, ending in fire.”
According to the statement in Variety, frontman Dave Mustaine added that he wanted to go out on his “own terms” while the band is still on top. He added, “I have travelled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans, and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them.”
For the unversed, Megadeth was greatly influenced by UFO, Black Sabbath, and British heavy metal bands such as Raven and Venom, among others. Its first album in 1985 sold over 254,000 copies in the US. With the band now bidding farewell, its mascot, Vic Rattlehead, requested the Cyber Army to prepare for a "global farewell tour."
As part of other awards, Megadeth received a longer-lasting one, a Grammy in 2017 for the title track of Dystopia. Reflecting on memories made by Megadeth, Dave Mustaine boasted of "starting a revolution.” He also noted that "changed the guitar world and how it's played."
