Martha Stewart and Katy Perry controversy

Following her widely reported 11-minute space flight with Blue Origin, which earned her the nickname "astronaut," lifestyle icon Katy Perry quietly made her point by bringing up a memory from her past that many seemed to have forgotten.

Stewart, now 83, shared a throwback video on Instagram of herself from 2006, effortlessly floating aboard a zero-gravity flight with NASA astronauts. In the footage, Stewart can be seen doing push-ups and somersaults in mid-air, clearly enjoying the weightless conditions that closely mimic those of space.

Alongside the clip, she cheekily captioned, “In case you spaced out in 2007, Martha has always been ahead of her time.” The video was set to none other than Perry’s hit track Firework, complete with the lyrics, “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind?” While she never directly named Katy, fans quickly picked up on the timing and the shade, praising the post as “peak classy drag”—a level of playful pettiness that only Martha Stewart could execute with such elegance.

Katy Perry, meanwhile, has found herself at the centre of a wider debate. Beyond Stewart’s jab, celebrities like Olivia Munn and Olivia Wilde have also criticised the commercialised nature of such spaceflights.

Munn went so far as to quip on live television, “It’s so much money to go to space, and some people can’t even afford eggs.” Even Wendy’s, the fast-food chain known for its online wit, threw in a barbed comment, tweeting, “Can we send her back?”—a nod to Perry dramatically kissing the ground upon landing.

Passengers Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez defended the flight in spite of the criticism, urging detractors to find out more about Blue Origin's objectives. But Perry has said nothing, so the public is left to wonder if her brief foray into space qualifies her as an astronaut or just someone with a lot of bragging rights.
