Filmmaker Shafi, renowned for his comedic films that brought joy to Malayali audiences, passed away in a private hospital in Kochi past midnight on Saturday. He was 56 years old.
Rasheed M H, popularly known as Shafi, had been receiving treatment after suffering a stroke on January 16. Despite being in critical condition for several days, he succumbed to his illness at 12:25 am, as confirmed by hospital sources.
Actor Vishnu Unnikrishnan confirmed the news, sharing a post on his Facebook page. "Shafi sir has departed, leaving behind laughter and unforgettable stories that will be cherished forever. Tributes!!," he posted.
As per family sources, Shafi's body was transported to his residence on BTS Road in Edappally. It will be placed at the Cochin Service Co-operative Bank Hall in Kaloor on Sunday from 9 am to 12 pm, allowing the public to pay their final respects.
The cremation is set to take place at 4 pm on Sunday at the Kaloor Muslim Juma Masjid, according to family members. Shafi’s elder brother, Rafi, is part of the acclaimed writer-director duo Rafi-Mecartin, while his uncle was the late, legendary filmmaker Siddique.
Shafi, who began his career as an assistant director under the esteemed filmmaker Rajasenan, left an indelible mark on the Malayalam film industry with his directorial debut, One Man Show, in 2001. Throughout a career spanning over two decades, he directed more than ten films, earning widespread acclaim for his comedic expertise. His successful collaborations with actor Dileep resulted in numerous hits, such as Kalyanaraman, Marykkundoru Kunjaadu, and Two Countries.
Other standout films in his repertoire include Pulival Kalyanam, Thommanum Makkalum, Mayavi, and Chattambinadu, further cementing his position as a respected filmmaker in Malayalam cinema. Shafi’s most recent directorial work was the 2022 film Aanandam Paramanandam.
