Dhurandhar, the upcoming Ranveer Singh starrer, has run into legal trouble just a week before its theatrical release. The family of Late Major Mohit Sharma, Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal awardee, has approached the Delhi High Court seeking an immediate stay on the film’s release.
In their petition, the family alleges that the film mirrors Major Sharma’s life, undercover mission, and martyrdom without consent from either the family or the Indian Army.
The petition has been filed through advocates Roopenshu Pratap Singh and Manish Sharma of Samaanta Law Firm. According to the plea, several scenes and elements in the trailer and promotional material “unmistakably mirror” Major Sharma’s career as an elite counter-terror specialist who operated in Kashmir. Since the trailer dropped, social media discussions and media reports have frequently drawn parallels between Ranveer Singh’s character and the decorated officer.
The family claims that the filmmakers never acknowledged this resemblance nor sought consultation at any stage of production. The petition states that “a martyr is not a commercial commodity” and that recreating his life “for profit, without truth, dignity, or due permission” is unacceptable. The plea argues that the portrayal infringes upon Major Sharma’s posthumous personality rights under Article 21 of the Constitution and violates the family’s right to privacy and emotional well-being.
The petition also raises national security concerns, alleging that the film appears to depict sensitive military strategies, infiltration techniques, and operational details. The family contends that there is no evidence the filmmakers obtained clearance from the Additional Directorate General of Public Information, the Indian Army authority responsible for approving military portrayals in films.

The respondents named in the petition include the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the ADGPI, director and co-producer Aditya Dhar, Jio Studios, and producer Jyoti Deshpande. The family has requested that the release of Dhurandhar be halted until they are granted a private screening. They have also sought a direction making it mandatory for filmmakers to secure consent from a martyr’s legal heirs and the Indian Army before depicting real-life military heroes.
The legal action comes shortly after director Aditya Dhar issued a public clarification on X, stating that the film is not based on Major Mohit Sharma. “Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma,” he wrote, adding that any future biopic on the officer would be made only with full consultation and consent of the family.
Dhurandhar, featuring Ranveer Singh along with Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, Akshaye Khanna, and Arjun Rampal, is scheduled to release in theatres on December 5. The High Court’s decision will now determine whether the film proceeds as planned.
