Mahesh Bhatt reacts to Donald Trump's 100% tariff

Bollywood director and producer Mahesh Bhatt has addressed US President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of imposing a 100 per cent tariff on films produced outside the United States.

The filmmaker anticipated that the Telugu film industry would have less impact than the Hindi film industry. He has recently shared his thoughts on the impact of the US government’s 100 per cent tariff rule.

During a conversation with ANI, Mahesh Bhatt said, “Jab 100% tarrif ka zikar ho raha tha to na jane humko kyun laga tha ki hum kuch surakshit reh jayenge ki ye jo aag ki jo lapte hain ye humare ghar tak nahin pahuchegi.. (When 100% tariff was being mentioned, I don't know why we felt that we would be safe and that whatever fire is coming will not reach our place).”

He added, “ye to hona hi tha.. ab iska kya impact hota hai wo dekhna bahut zaruri hain kyunki kya ye streaming content ko bhi asar karegi? (this was bound to happen.. Now it is very important to see what impact it has because… Will this impact the streaming content?)”

The filmmaker continued, “magar jo mujhe samajh aaya ye hai ki Telugu film jo humari hai na wo waha par bahut uski consumption hai… Hindi cinema ka jo hai footprint thoda sa wider hai (But what I understood is that our Telugu films are consumed a lot there… The footprint of Hindi cinema is a little wider).”

He further noted, “Halanki impact sab honge aur distributer jisko wahan par Rs 100 dene padte the usko Rs 200 dene padenge… to zahir hai ki wo jo flow of filme jo hain wo kam hongi (However, everyone will have impact and the distributors who had to pay Rs 100 there will have to pay Rs 200… so it is obvious that the flow of films will be less).”

Mahesh Bhatt’s statement came after the US government announced a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the US, citing the domestic film industry's rapid decline and national security concerns.

Trump claims foreign nations are luring American filmmakers with incentives, constituting a "national threat." The tariffs aim to revive the US film industry by encouraging domestic production.
