The eagerly awaited follow-up to the 2019 smash hit Lucifer is L2: Empuraan, which is directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran is finally on OTT.

The film, which was produced by Lyca Productions, Aashirvad Cinemas, and Sree Gokulam Movies, was released in theatres on March 27, 2025. Mohanlal returns to his legendary role as Khureshi-Ab'raam (Stephen Nedumpally) in the movie, and Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Zayed Masood again, but with a larger on-screen presence.

The film's star power is further enhanced by the ensemble cast, which also includes Indrajith Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Saniya Iyappan, Arjun Das, Saikumar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Baiju Santhosh.

Following its theatrical release, L2: Empuraan is set to stream on JioHotstar from April 24, 2025. JioHotstar made the announcement through a post on X (formerly Twitter), with both the platform and Mohanlal sharing the news. The film’s digital release is expected to attract a global audience, building on the success of its predecessor, which became a major hit and earned over ₹105 crore nett in India within a month of its release.

A public outcry resulted from the controversy surrounding the film's depiction of the Gujarat riots. To address the issues brought up by viewers and critics, the filmmakers responded by deciding to cut out 17 specific scenes from the movie. In a statement, Mohanlal acknowledged the anguish some of the film's content had caused and promised fans that the offensive references would be taken out to preserve the film's integrity and show consideration for viewers' feelings.

The team began filming the movie in October 2023 and visited several Indian cities, including Faridabad, Shimla, Leh, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kerala, and even foreign countries like the US, the UK, and the UAE. L2: Following Lucifer's legacy as a significant industry milestone, Empuraan is praised as one of the priciest Malayalam film productions. Five languages are available for the high-budget movie's release, guaranteeing a global audience.
