The Malayalam movie L2 Empuraan, starring superstar Mohanlal, is doing really well at the box office. The film has completed 8 days in theatres and has earned a total of Rs 87.78 crore so far in India. This shows that the movie is still going strong even after a week of its release.

Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, L2 Empuraan is the sequel to the 2019 hit film Lucifer. In this new part, Mohanlal continues to play the mysterious and powerful character Stephen Nedumpally, also known as Khureshi Ab’raam. The film also stars Prithviraj as Zayed Masood, Stephen’s right-hand man.

The film had a solid start. It earned Rs 21 crore on its opening day, March 27. On its first Friday, it collected Rs 11.1 crore. Over the first weekend, it added Rs 13.25 crore and Rs 13.65 crore on Saturday and Sunday. In total, the movie made Rs 84.35 crore in its first week.

As it entered its second week, the movie earned Rs 3.43 crore on Thursday, which brought the total collection to ₹87.78 crore. Although the film’s collection is slightly slowing down, it still has a strong fan following and is on track to become one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time.

However, there was some controversy after the release. Reports say that the makers had to make 24 voluntary cuts to the film due to backlash. Some of these scenes were related to the 2002 Gujarat riots, religious matters, violence against women, and the name of the villain. These scenes were changed after criticism.

Actor and politician Suresh Gopi spoke about the matter in Parliament. He said that the changes were not due to political pressure but were decisions taken by the filmmakers, with permission from the director.

The film also hints at a third part. At the end of L2 Empuraan, the audience is introduced to a young Stephen, played by Mohanlal’s real-life son, Pranav Mohanlal. This sets the stage for the next film in the series, L3: The Beginning.
