Fashion magazine W Korea issued an apology four days after facing criticism for its recent breast cancer awareness event, which featured several major Korean entertainment stars.
The event, called "Love Your W 2025," was held on Wednesday and featured performances by actor Byeon Woo-seok, Jang Won-young of IVE, Karina of aespa, Big Bang's Taeyang, and BTS's V.
Although the event's goal was to increase awareness of breast cancer, it immediately caused a backlash on the internet, with many internet users saying it denigrated cancer patients and felt more like a glamorous party than an awareness campaign.
Responding to the controversy, W Korea shared an official statement on Instagram, saying, “We deeply apologize for failing to carefully consider the perspective of breast cancer patients and their families, and for causing discomfort and distress.”
The apology continued, “We also regret that many who participated in good faith and supported the campaign’s goals may have been affected by the controversy. We are reflecting on our shortcomings, especially thinking of those who were disheartened by the event.” W Korea added that it plans to “re-evaluate the entire planning and execution process of future events.”
The event was sponsored by luxury brands and featured a photo wall with celebrities.
As pictures surfaced of celebrities wearing skimpy attire, raising their glasses, dancing to songs with explicit lyrics, and taking in the festive atmosphere, controversy erupted. The event was criticised by breast cancer patients, who described it as "a social party for celebrities" instead of a true awareness campaign.
