The families of Kim Sae Ron and Kim Soo Hyun are now embroiled in a highly emotional public dispute over what started out as a planned TV segment on SBS's Curious Stories Y.
Both sides have expressed dissatisfaction and accusations following the abrupt cancellation of their episode, claiming that the truth is being misrepresented.
On 1 November, Kim Sae Ron’s family spoke out through their lawyer, Bu Ji Seok, expressing how blindsided and upset they felt by how events unfolded.
Bu Ji Seok criticised Kim Soo Hyun’s team, saying, “During the show’s coverage, they changed their positions and are now accusing the family of fabricating the story.”
According to the family, the entire production process left them feeling misled and marginalised.
They explained that SBS reached out “out of the blue” on Saturday, 8 November, asking for an interview about the controversy. But what shocked them more was discovering that Kim Soo Hyun had already completed his interview with the production team — and that the request to the family came only after the episode was practically ready to air.
The broadcast was scheduled for 14 November, and although authorities had previously advised the bereaved family not to engage with the media, they still agreed to go ahead and scheduled their interview for 10 November, hoping to ensure both sides of the story were heard.
During this meeting, the family said they handed over evidence they believe proves Kim Sae Ron and Kim Soo Hyyun were in a relationship while she was still a minor.
They asked SBS to handle the subject matter fairly and present it without bias. But two days before airing, they were suddenly told the entire episode was being pulled.
The family said what hurt most was the reaction from Kim Soo Hyun’s legal team. They accused his lawyer of attempting to silence them, saying, “The opposing lawyer unilaterally used threatening media tactics, such as threatening civil and criminal action or grounds for arrest if the information was released.”
In response, Kim Soo Hyun’s attorney pushed back, insisting, “We only requested caution due to concerns about additional crimes and secondary harm; we never intended to block the broadcast. We also stated that we will not object to the broadcast if the rebuttals are adequately reflected.”
With tensions climbing, SBS released an official explanation, saying, “We indeed researched the Kim Sae Ron and Kim Soo Hyun case. After our research and internal discussions, we decided not to air it. Both sides have valid opinions, and we felt there was no point in reconstructing the story on air; therefore, we deemed it difficult to air.” They emphasised that cancelling an episode after review is routine and not unusual.
Meanwhile, the conflict is only intensifying. Kim Sae Ron’s mother has now shared more material she claims further supports her daughter’s allegations, showing that neither side is backing down anytime soon.
