‘Godfather of Korean Comedy’ Jeon Yoo-seong dies at 76

Legendary comedian Jeon Yoo-seong, known as the ‘Godfather of Korean comedy,’ passed away at 76 due to health complications, including pneumothorax.

Comedian Jeon Yoo-seong, who was popularly known as the ‘Godfather of Korean comedy’, passed away on Thursday, September 25, due to health issues. He was 76.

The veteran comedian was admitted to Jeonbuk National University Hospital due to worsening pneumothorax symptoms.

His daughter was by his side. Jeon Yoo-seong’s funeral will be held at Seoul Asan Hospital and will follow the tradition of a comedian’s funeral.

He was previously admitted to the hospital due to acute pneumonia, arrhythmia and a Covid-19 infection last year.

Last year, Jeon's health had gotten worse, and he was admitted to the hospital because of acute pneumonia, arrhythmia, and a COVID-19 infection. During his illness, he reportedly lost 16 kilograms (35 pounds). He had surgery to repair a collapsed lung in June.

He had to postpone his appearance at an event during the Busan International Comedy Festival on August 6 due to a recent deterioration of his condition.

Comedian Kim Young-chul tearfully announced the death of Jeon Yoo-seong on Friday during his SBS Power FM show, Kim Young-chul’s Power FM, where he serves as DJ.

He said during the gig, “I have some sad news.” He then announced the news of Jeon’s death and said, “He was our eternal senior. Comedian Jeon Yoo-seong passed away last night.”

Kim eventually wiped away tears, saying, “I felt heartbroken upon hearing the news.

Kim recalled, “Senior Jeon and I worked together on Gag Concert. He was the one who bought me books when I was a rookie.” He continued, “I visited him last year, and this morning, many thoughts came to mind. I pray he rests peacefully in a better place.”

Kim also shared a tribute to the late comedian on his Instagram with a photo, He penned in the caption, “Last year, I had the chance to meet Senior Jeon again for a YouTube shoot. I was deeply grateful just for his willingness to join. After filming, during our meal, I still vividly remember how little he could eat.”



Kim recalled how Jeon Yoo-seong helped him in his initial career and continued, “In 1999, during my rookie training for Gag Concert, Senior Jeon bought me three books at a KBS bookstore and said, ‘You must read a lot.’ His words remain in my heart, and though I’ve tried to live by them, I regret not reaching out to him more often.”

He concluded his post, “I hope he no longer suffers there and can read and write to his heart’s content. Rest in peace, Senior.”
