K Drama, Genie Make a Wish becomes most watched non English series on Netflix

The Korean romantic fantasy drama “Genie, Make a Wish” has taken global audiences by storm, climbing to the top of Netflix’s weekly non-English TV chart, the streaming platform confirmed on Wednesday.

The series, which first appeared at No. 5 on the list, has now soared to the top spot after amassing 8 million views during the week ending October 12.

The 12-part Netflix original series, which debuted on October 3, has enthralled viewers all over the world with its unique blend of romance, fantasy, and emotional drama.

The narrative centres on Ga-young (Bae Suzy), a woman with antisocial personality disorder whose life is completely upended when she unintentionally awakens a genie (Kim Woo-bin) who has been imprisoned in a slumber in the desert of Dubai for a thousand years.

The genie grants her three wishes in exchange for his long-awaited freedom, laying the groundwork for an enchanted yet provocative journey.

Renowned screenwriter Kim Eun-sook, whose name is associated with some of the most well-known K-dramas of the last 20 years, such as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016–17), Heirs (2013), Secret Garden (2010), and Descendants of the Sun (2016), wrote the series.

After the original director, Lee Byeong-heon, of Extreme Job (2019) and Chicken Nugget (2024), resigned from the project, Ahn Gil-ho, best known for The Glory, took over as director of Genie, Make a Wish.

Both reviewers and viewers have lauded the show's creative world-building and the chemistry between its main characters, describing it as the ideal fusion of whimsical and genuine emotion.

Audiences have responded favourably to the series' fusion of magical realism and human vulnerability, especially younger viewers who are drawn to its novel perspective on fate and self-discovery.

Make a Wish has not only topped charts but also reignited interest in Korean fantasy dramas worldwide thanks to its breathtaking visuals, emotionally charged storytelling, and a dream pairing in Suzy and Kim Woo-bin, Genie, demonstrating once again how dominant K-content is in the streaming market.
