Comedian Park Mi-sun talks about her breast cancer for the first time

For the first time, comedian Park Mi-sun has discussed her fight with breast cancer in public, describing her emotional journey of gratitude, fear, and recovery.

Appearing on tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, Park discussed her illness with remarkable honesty after months away from the public eye.

In a preview clip released on Monday titled “The sister we missed, Park Mi-sun! Her courageous story and a surprise letter,” the beloved comedian appeared smiling, though noticeably changed, with short hair. “I think many people will be surprised to see me like this,” she said softly. “I gathered my courage to come here.”

Park had halted all her professional activities earlier this year, in January, after developing health complications. At the time, her agency Cube Entertainment only said that she needed to rest, leading to widespread speculation about her condition.

During her absence, fellow comedians such as Sunwoo Yong-nyeo, Cho Hye-ryeon, Lee Kyung-sil, Ahn Young-mi, and Kim Shin-young shared messages of love and support.

Now, for the first time, Park has confirmed that she has been battling breast cancer. “Breast cancer is not something you can casually say you have completely recovered from,” she explained, admitting that while she is recovering, her strength hasn’t fully returned.

She also spoke about a frightening episode during her treatment, recalling being hospitalised for two weeks with severe pneumonia. “They didn’t know the cause, so I was given antibiotics and many kinds of medication. It was treatment to keep me alive, but it felt like I was going to die,” she said.

Despite the physical and emotional toll, Park described maintaining a mindset of gratitude. “I was thankful that I got sick in winter, and thankful that I could receive treatment in a cool place in the middle of summer,” she said. “Keeping that mindset made the whole process feel lighter.”

With a warm smile, she added that the outpouring of concern and care from fans and colleagues made her realise how much she is loved. “I realised how loved I am. So many people worried and cared about me.”
