“Koi poochta tha toh main bolta tha, ‘Uske saath kaam karna mushkil hai’” – Aamir Khan reveals he didn't want to work with Salman Khan after Andaz Apna Apna

Bollywood superstars Salman Khan and Aamir Khan discussed their time filming the now-famous and cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna and the unanticipated conflict that ensued in a rare and refreshingly candid conversation.

Appearing together on the premiere episode of Too Much With Kajol and Twinkle, the actors shared stories that were both revealing and laugh-out-loud funny, giving fans a peek into a working relationship that was, at times, far from smooth.

With his usual candour, Salman recalled the chaos of his overbooked schedule during the 1990s. “Mr Aamir Khan used to land up on the set at 7 in the morning for a 9 o’clock shift because he had one film and I had 15 films,” he said, highlighting the pressure of juggling three shooting schedules a day. “By the time I used to come, I'd be exhausted. He would rehearse every scene multiple times. I would say, ‘Jab iska final ho jaaye, toh mujhe bula lena take ke liye.’ (Once he’s done with his final rehearsal, just call me for the take)"

Aamir Khan, ever the perfectionist, teased him right back: “Jo time tha ussi par aata tha bhai (I used to come at the time that was scheduled)” before imitating Salman’s tendency to nap on set. Salman laughed, admitting he wasn’t particularly energetic about a scene where all he had to say was “Uyi Ma”: “Toh usme main kaye ko energy daloon? (So why should I put my energy into that?)”

The light-hearted back-and-forth gradually revealed deeper undercurrents. Aamir confessed that after Andaz Apna Apna, he had real doubts about working with Salman again. “Ye sach baat hai (this is the truth)” he admitted. “Koi poochta tha toh main bolta tha ki uske saath kaam karna mushkil hai (Whenever someone asked, I used to say that working with him/her was difficult)”

Twinkle Khanna chimed in with a knowing laugh, remembering Aamir’s old interviews where he said just that.

Yet despite the tension, the two recalled moments of genuine fun on set. “We would burst into laughter while doing a scene,” Aamir said warmly — and that easy camaraderie has clearly returned, even if it took time.

Their honesty, humour, and ability to laugh at the past remind us why Andaz Apna Apna still resonates. It wasn't just the characters that were unforgettable — it was the perfectly imperfect chemistry between two legends, now older, wiser, and still wildly entertaining together.
