The legendary late basketball legend Kobe Bryant's movie is currently in development at Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is reportedly currently under pre-production.
According to Variety, Warner Bros studio has recently bought a script that focuses on the dramatic events of the 1996 NBA Draft, when Bryant's journey to the Los Angeles Lakers began. The outlet has also reported that the upcoming film is tentatively titled With the 8th Pick?.
Alex Sohn and Gavin Johannsen have penned the script. The sources have also revealed that Warner Bros. moved quickly to secure the script, beating out other studios and streamers who had shown interest.
The Charlotte Hornets selected Bryant with the 13th pick, but he was traded to the Lakers right away for Vlade Divac.
The New Jersey Nets, who had the eighth pick that year, are mentioned in the title. Bryant was the pick their general manager had in mind, but head coach John Calipari insisted on going in a different direction.
The forthcoming film, according to insiders, is in the vein of Moneyball and Air, which chronicled Nike's signing of rookie Michael Jordan. Warner Bros. has yet to comment on the project.
