The movie was released in Japan on October 4, 2024, and has achieved an incredible milestone of running for 115 days in theaters, entering its 17th week. It has now been shortlisted as one of the five greatest international films at the prestigious Japan Academy Film Prize, a remarkable achievement considering 204 international films were eligible for the honor. The winner of the Best International Film award will be announced on March 14, 2025.
Laapataa Ladies stands in competition with some of the world’s finest films, including Poor Things, Oppenheimer, The Zone of Interest, and Civil War. This selection places director Kiran Rao alongside globally renowned filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, Yorgos Lanthimos, Alex Garland, and Jonathan Glazer.
The film has already enjoyed a successful run in India, winning the Best Film Critics’ Choice Award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2024 (IFFM). It has also been India’s entry for the Oscars, further showcasing its critical and international acclaim.
Based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami, Laapataa Ladies was produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande under the banners of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions. The screenplay and dialogues were crafted by Sneha Desai, with additional dialogues by Divyanidhi Sharma. The movie’s heartfelt narrative and engaging storytelling have captivated audiences worldwide.
