Filmmaker Karan Johar shared a beautiful memory from his childhood that marked the beginning of his love affair with fashion and the fashion industry. Taking his followers down memory lane, Karan Johar posted a picture from 1981, recalling a special event curated by his mother and aunts—and inaugurated by none other than the legendary actor Zeenat Aman.

“Memories can be therapeutic … wanted to share this one indelible memory I have,” Karan began the caption.

He revealed that his mother and aunts decided to host an exhibition of clothes, despite having no formal background in fashion or business. Undeterred, they approached a then-upcoming designer to help curate the collection—none other than Abu Jani, who went on to become one of India’s most celebrated fashion icons.

“The designers in 1981 was ABU JANI…. (the now celebrated and brilliant fashion force),” Johar wrote. The collection was titled ALKAPRI—a name derived from the children of the aunts: Alka, Karan, and Priyanka.

Karan fondly remembered the joyful lunches, chai sessions, and the laughter that filled their residence during this time. “Abu regaled the ladies with his incorrigible humour and I used to sit in a corner and secretly enjoy the fashion and of course the gossip,” he recalled.

The highlight of the post was the mention of veteran actor Zeenat Aman, who was requested by Johar’s mother to inaugurate the event. “She very graciously did so,” Johar wrote. “If you stare carefully a star struck and very much in awe of ZEENAT AMAN fan has photo bombed the picture! (me!)”

In a nostalgic tone, Karan concluded, “I look back and feel that was the beginning of my love story with fashion and the fashion industry ….. #thosewerethedays️”
