Kannada actress Ranya Rao was arrested at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru for allegedly smuggling gold. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 14.8 kg of gold from the actress' possession after she landed from Dubai on the night of Monday (March 3).

Ranya, who had been under the DRI surveillance due to her frequent international trips, allegedly wore most of the gold inconspicuously and even concealed gold bars in her clothes.

Ranya's arrest has raised eyebrows, especially since she's the daughter of a DGP-rank IPS officer serving in Karnataka.

Officials are investigating whether Ranya had any backing from law enforcement personnel. Preliminary investigations suggest that upon arrival at the airport, Ranya would claim to be the daughter of the DGP and call local police officials to escort her home.

The DRI is now probing whether these officers were in any way involved or unknowingly used in the smuggling network.

Ranya has acted in several South Indian films, including the Kannada movie 'Maanikya' alongside superstar Sudeep. The DRI had been monitoring her movements after noticing her frequent trips to Dubai, and intercepted her upon arrival.
