Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth in talks for a gangster movie with Lokesh Kanagaraj: Reports

Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, two of the greatest icons of Indian cinema, may soon share the screen after more than 40 years apart, which has Tamil cinema aglow with anticipation.

The recent reports have suggested that director Lokesh Kanagaraj is reportedly preparing for his next ambitious project, a gangster action drama that would bring the legendary duo together, in the wake of Coolie's enormous box office success.

An article in Pinkvilla indicates that Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth are currently in advanced stages of their talks. If verified, this movie will be their first reunion since Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum (1979), which was 46 years ago.

Although a formal announcement has not yet been made, Raaj Kamal Films International is anticipated to provide funding for the project. According to early reports, the plot will centre on two elderly gangsters, laying the groundwork for an intense performance.

Although there was much conjecture that Lokesh's next project might be a superhero movie starring Aamir Khan or Kaithi 2 with Karthi, the current rumours indicate that he is giving the Rajinikanth–Kamal Haasan partnership top priority.

Beyond this project, Lokesh has a lot of exciting projects planned, such as Vikram 2, which will continue his LCU universe, a stand-alone movie for Suriya's Rolex, the upcoming production Benz, and his acting debut in a movie directed by Arun Matheswaran.

In the meantime, Rajinikanth's Coolie, which debuted on August 14, 2025, has solidified its status as one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. Rajinikanth plays Deva, a daily wage worker with a troubled past who embarks on a mission of vengeance, while Nagarjuna plays the antagonist in the movie. Its grandeur is further enhanced by the inclusion of Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and Aamir Khan in the ensemble cast.

If Lokesh is successful in bringing Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan together, Tamil cinema will experience one of the most significant partnerships in recent history, which is sure to please moviegoers of all ages.
