Kajol reveals she cried after slapping in Behudhi

Bollywood actress Kajol recently talked about her first movie, Bekhudi in which she co-starred in with Kamal Sadanah when she was just 16 years old.

In an interview with Brut India, Kajol talked candidly about a particularly trying time on the set: the scene in which she had to give Kamal her first slap. She was more shaken by the experience than she had anticipated.

Kajol recalled how strange and upsetting it felt to raise her hand against Kamal, who she describes as “so sweet and so nice.”

She said, “To slap someone completely blameless in front of you for a scene was beyond me. I could not understand it. It was just not working. I just could not slap him. I just couldn’t raise my hand. It went beyond my morality, my ethics, my conscience. I liked Kamal. He was so sweet and so nice to me. A perfect gentleman. He was lovely to work with. Why would I slap him? It was so alien to me then.”

Her hesitation wasn’t taken lightly — the director even accused her of dragging out the takes to punish Kamal, which upset Kajol. “I was upset with the director for saying that,” she confessed. But after a few tries, she managed a take that worked. Yet, the emotional toll didn’t end there.

Kajol said, “And after that I was like, ‘now, you watch’. Then there was one perfect take. But after that, I cried, I howled. I have apologised to Kamal. I said I am sorry because it affected me on a deep level that I have done something completely unfair with someone who totally didn’t deserve it and it was just so wrong.”

She explained that acting in emotional scenes often “opens up barriers, it opens up filters, it opens up all these preconceived notions,” revealing just how deeply the experience affected her.

Bekhudi, directed by Rahul Rawail, was Kajol and Kamal’s debut film back in 1992. The story centres on Radhika and Vicky, two college students who fall in love despite their families’ objections — a classic tale of young love facing the odds.
