Jasleen Royal’s performance as the opening act for Coldplay’s Mumbai concerts has ignited a heated debate online. While the opportunity marked a career milestone for the Indian singer-songwriter, her set faced sharp criticism from attendees and social media users.
Concert-goers described her performance as “offbeat” and “out of tune,” with many claiming her style didn’t align with Coldplay’s global appeal. Comments on platforms like Reddit highlighted the backlash, with some calling her “overrated” and “pathetic.” Others pointed out off-key moments that seemed to clash with the concert’s high-energy atmosphere.
Jasleen Royal is the most PATHETIC opening act I've ever witnessed. Can't believe she got to open for Coldplay. Not only was she an absolute mismatch for the vibe but also she was offbeat, hitting the wrong notes. It felt like a child was given a mic and didn't know what to do Tina Gurnaney (@TinaGurnaney) January 19, 2025

Adding fuel to the controversy, playback singer Vishal Dadlani weighed in with a now-deleted Instagram Story. Although he didn’t name anyone directly, his harsh critique left little to the imagination. Dadlani called the performance “embarrassing” for the artist and the country, labeling the singer as “basic-to-bad.” His post circulated widely on social media, sparking further discussions.
Despite the negativity, actress and Bigg Boss OTT fame Uorfi Javed came to Jasleen’s defense. In an Instagram story, Uorfi praised Jasleen’s achievement, saying, “It’s a BIG DEAL that Jasleen got to share the stage with a band like Coldplay. The fact that Jasleen Royal was given this opportunity itself (without any backing) proves her hard work and talent.”
Known for her soulful tracks like Din Shagna Da, Love You Zindagi, and Ranjha, Jasleen Royal has built a reputation for creating music that resonates deeply with listeners. While her Coldplay set received mixed reactions, many acknowledge the significance of being chosen to open for such a globally celebrated band.
Jasleen remains undeterred by the criticism. She is set to perform again during Coldplay’s upcoming concert in Ahmedabad, maintaining her focus on delivering her best.
