DC Studios and James Gunn confirmed the much-awaited sequel, Superman: Man of Tomorrow along with the release date as he shared a poster on social media.
The major announcement was posted on Instagram by DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn. He revealed that the movie, which will hit theatres on July 9, 2027, has been thoughtfully positioned within DC's forthcoming release schedule.
Alongside the news, Gunn posted a comic panel showing Superman squaring off against Lex Luthor in his powerful Warsuit, with the caption, “Man of Tomorrow. In theatres July 9, 2027.”
Starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, the first Superman movie was a huge hit, becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of 2025 and shattering box office records. Fans are eagerly anticipating what the Man of Steel will do next after such a successful debut.
Even more exciting is the fact that Nicholas Hoult will reprise his role as Lex Luthor. In Gunn's Superman, Hoult first appeared as Superman's biggest foe. Fans can expect Luthor to don his famous Warsuit from the comics in the sequel. Packed with cutting-edge gear and technology, the armoured suit was made to give Luthor the strength and capability to take on Superman head-on.
Luthor had tried to create a clone of Superman in order to defeat him in Gunn's first movie, but the plan had failed. Based on the latest teaser, it appears that Luthor is taking matters into his own hands and is prepared to confront the Man of Steel directly.
Although the plot is still unknown, many people are wondering if the film will take inspiration from previous Superman tales.
The character Lobo was featured in the 2020 animated movie Superman: Man of Tomorrow (Jason Momoa will play Lobo in Supergirl next summer). The 2003 miniseries Superman: Birthright, which reimagined Superman's origin for a contemporary audience, served as the model for that animated film.
In the long run, DC Studios has a lot of exciting projects planned. On June 26, 2026, Craig Gillespie's Supergirl will be released, and on September 11, 2026, James Watkins' horror film Clayface will follow. Superman: Man of Tomorrow will then be released in theatres in July 2027, a few months ahead of the eagerly anticipated Matt Reeves-directed Batman Part II, which is set for release on October 1, 2027.
