James Corden says Rihanna's voice note got him into the new smurfs movie

James Corden has shared the unexpected and star-studded story of how he became part of the new Smurfs movie, set to hit Indian cinemas on July 18, 2025. According to the comedian and actor, his involvement all began with a surprising message from none other than Rihanna.

“I got a voice note from Rihanna on my phone, which had never happened to me before or since,” Corden revealed. “She said, ‘Would you come and be in this Smurf movie?’ Would I? I was so blown away. And that is the whole story of how I came to play No Name.”

Corden voices No Name, a central character in the animated reboot, and Smurfette’s closest friend. Described by director Chris Miller as “the heart and soul of the story,” No Name is a smurf in search of purpose and identity. “In the Smurf world, he is completely lost,” said Corden. “For him, the film is about discovering who he really is. Smurfette is his ally, his confidante—the one who reassures him he’s going to be okay, even when she’s giving him tough love.”

Adding to the magic is Rihanna, who voices Smurfette and contributes her singing talents to the film. “She’s also a brilliant singer, because… it’s Rihanna,” Corden laughed. Despite his experience with Carpool Karaoke, singing in a studio with Rihanna was intimidating. “It was hard not to feel like somebody made a huge mistake,” he joked. “But it was also surreal and unforgettable.”

The opportunity to join one of the most iconic animated franchises in pop culture wasn’t lost on Corden. “I reckon wherever you are in the world, you could show a picture of a Smurf to people, and more than half of them would recognize it,” he said. “It’s a phenomenon that has lasted so long and still feels relevant. I’m very honored to be part of it.”

The Smurfs, presented by Paramount Pictures India, will release in both English and Hindi, bringing a blend of humor, heart, and music to audiences of all ages. With Corden’s charm and Rihanna’s star power, the beloved blue creatures are set for a big-screen comeback that promises laughs, life lessons, and a lot of blue magic.
