J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, appears to have made a veiled criticism of the three lead actors from the franchise in a social media post.
Responding to a question that asked, "What actor/actress instantly ruins a movie for you?", Rowling wrote, “Three guesses. Sorry, but that was irresistible,” followed by three laughing emojis.
While she did not explicitly name anyone, it seems she was referring to Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who portrayed Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, respectively, between 2001 and 2011.
The remark seems to stem from the fallout between Rowling and the trio in 2020, after she published an essay about surviving sexual assault, in which she controversially described transgender identity as “deeply misogynistic and regressive.”
Following her comments, all three actors publicly expressed support for trans rights. Radcliffe, for example, stated, “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people.” Watson added on social media, “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned.”
Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort in the films, later defended Rowling, describing the abuse she received as “disgusting” in an interview with The Telegraph.

Helena Bonham Carter, who portrayed Bellatrix Lestrange, also backed Rowling, stating in The Times that the backlash against her had been taken to extremes.
After the 2024 Cass review on gender identity services, Rowling suggested that she would likely never forgive Radcliffe and Watson, accusing them of aligning with a movement that aims to undermine women’s rights.
